Feed Somalia

Calgary

In the world we live in it is hard to think that nothing could get any worse than it is now; but that is exactly what is happening in Somalia. A humanitarian catastrophe is continuously unfolding in Somalia and the situation continues to deteriorate at an alarming rate.
Since the war in 1992, thousands of Somalis have fled on foot to neighboring countries and to refugee camps within other cities of Somalia.

This civil war has left forests cut and vegetation dry. Tens of thousands of Somalis are feared dead as the famine continues to claim more and more lives each day. This is why we need to act now. All human beings deserve the right to live and access to their basic needs (food, water and shelter).

Step UP for Somalia

We are seven Somali Canadian cousins who want to live in a world where famine does not exist.

We need your help. There are currently tens of thousands of people feared dead in Somalia from the worst drought in 60 years. The United Nations has officially declared the crisis a famine.

We believe Canadian youth can walk together and make a difference.

On August 5th-8th, in honour of the countless Somalis walking for miles in the drought (without food and water) to refugees camps, we will be walking for four days from Calgary to Edmonton to raise funds in support of the Somali famine victims.

Everyday hundreds of Somalis are dying from the deprivation of food and water as they attempt to walk to refugee camps nearby.

Please consider sponsoring our walk or starting one in your city on August 5th-8th.

It’s time to finally Step UP for Somalia.

Seven Young Calgarians to Walk 303km for Somali Drought Victims

Youth do their part to save lives in Somalia as they walk from Calgary to Edmonton

Seven youth. Four days. 62 hours. 303km. One goal of raising $10,000.
On August 5th to the 8th seven young Somali Canadians will be embarking on a journey from Calgary to Edmonton in the hopes of raising $10,000.00 for Oxfam Canada to go towards the Somali drought victims.

Everyday hundreds of Somalis are dying from the deprivation of food and water as they attempt to walk to refugee camps nearby.
What has been called one of the worst famines in Somalia by the UN in the past 60 years is now on the verge of killing more and more Somalis by the day.

Countless Somali men, women, children, elderly and the disabled are dying from lack of aid while the whole world watches.
“We are all human-beings and we all deserve the basic rights to food, water and shelter. My sisters and I were born in Mogadishu, and even though we have a good life in Canada our hearts break for the people suffering back home,” says Yasmin Siad one of the walkers and organizers of Step UP for Somalia.

Seven young Canadian walkers (ages 18-27) have committed to walking the complete distance by foot between Calgary and Edmonton (303km). We plan on taking various turns walking (with others resting in a car) as we move towards our goal. To make matters even more challenging some of the walkers will be taking part in Ramadan, fasting without food and water during the day, as we walk.

“We understand that the walk is going to be very difficult but many mothers, fathers and small children are already making the trek to flee Somalia without shoes, food, water and with children dying in their arms. This is our unique way of honouring those lives,” says Fartoon Siad, another one of the walkers and organizers.
